Our Library

Every School Needs a Library - Welcome to our library

‘You can find magic wherever you look. Sit back, relax, all you need is a book.’ Dr Seuss

Our school library is a central hub supporting every child and staff member in the entire school. Our school promotes reading by having an effective library to support each child’s learning journey at Kelson School. Also our library supports curriculum needs and teacher resources. Our library is open during lunchtimes for activities such as craft, games, dance or just for a quiet place to read.

All classes go to the library each week. Some classes go in small groups to ensure the librarian Mrs Wright can talk to each child to ensure their reading needs are met and she endeavours to help each child choose the right book for them around their reading level.

  • Each library session is varied and can include:
  • reading stories
  • reading challenges
  • borrowing books
  • library treasure hunts
  • learning about authors, illustrators and publishers
  • learning about different reading genres
  • presenting plays
  • presentations of new books
  • group sharing about books the children have read and enjoyed

Mrs Wright believes that books should be enjoyed, so she purchases books in many formats. Some children like graphic novels or historical fiction, some like funny and humorous books, some like picture books, some like fantasy or friendship books and others like books about facts, different cultures or animals. There is a book for everyone at Kelson school!

Student Librarians

Every year children get the opportunity to become a student librarian. Children in years 5 & 6 fill out an application form and go through an interview process and shelving test. The student librarians help the librarian run the library and learn many new skills. It’s not all about shelving books – that would be boring! The student librarians help with purchasing new books, they design displays, help promote new books, learn how to use the library computer application and best of all can borrow more books each week as a reward.
